Apple May Bring MagSafe Charging to 2024 iPad Pro Series

Apple is reportedly looking to add MagSafe wireless charging capabilities to its next iPad Pro tablets launching in 2024.

The move would allow the high-end iPad models to leverage the same magnetic charging tech used on recent iPhones.

Rumblings suggest Apple considered integrating the feature already back in 2021. But engineering challenges likely forced delaying it for the just-released 2022 iPad Pro series.

Now word from supply chain sources indicates MagSafe charging may finally materialize for 2024's iPad Pro refresh.

The next iPad Pro generation is expected to include a major redesign centered around larger 11.1-inch and 13-inch OLED displays.

If Apple transitions the tablet to a glass back, that would enable wireless charging. MagSafe would let users easily align an iPad Pro with a charging puck or stand using strong built-in magnets.

While charging speed looks slower than wired USB-C, MagSafe would provide more flexibility.

Owners could use the same MagSafe chargers meant for iPhones if in a pinch. And Magnetic snap-on cases could integrate charging coils to enable leaving the wire behind completely.

It's unclear whether the implementation would mimic iPhones directly with several charging magnets.

Using the round, single-coil design of a MacBook's magnetic charger is another possibility. This would continue pushing the iPad Pro's goal of rivaling entry-level laptops.

Adopting MagSafe does introduce tradeoffs like added cost and fragility, similar to iPhone. But the convenience and ecosystem ties likely outweigh that for Apple's tablet roadmap.

And the company just won a patent outlining wireless cases that can charge devices simultaneously, hinting at long-term wireless charging plans.

Bringing MagSafe charging could help the 2024 iPad Pro stand out as Apple pushes pro features like the rumored switch to in-house M3 processors.

While still speculation for now, signs point to MagSafe convenience coming to iPad Pro models next year if engineering issues are resolved.
