Lenovo recently unveiled the IdeaTab S6000, a new 10-inch Android tablet aiming for the budget market. The S6000 sports a slim and lightweight design that impressed in initial hands-on reviews, although its display and other aspects seem more middle-of-the-road.

Weighing 560 grams, the S6000 features one of the lightest chassis among 10-inch class tablets. It measures just 8.6mm thin as well.

Several reviewers highlighted the tablet's portability, commenting on its easy grip and comfort for extended viewing sessions. This compact construction comes at a very affordable $249 base price point for consumers.

Under the hood, a quad-core 1.2GHz MediaTek processor promises adequate performance for everyday tasks and casual 3D gaming. The S6000 also packs standard connectivity like micro HDMI-out, allowing video output to HDTVs. It ships with a stock Android 4.2 experience, rather than heavier manufacturer skins seen on pricier rivals.

However, Lenovo cut some corners on components to hit the low cost. The S6000’s 1280×800 IPS screen underwhelms next to the 1920×1200 or 2560×1600 resolutions found on many 2013 tablets.

While decent enough for the price, the display renders jagged text and images less smoothly. Viewing angles also suffer from color washout.

The tablet’s 5MP rear camera lacks a flash and other advanced controls as well.. And benchmark performance lags behind top-tier tablets with Snapdragon 800 or Tegra 4 silicon.

Still, the Lenovo S6000 shows promise as a secondary portable slate for web browsing and media enjoyment. It likely falls short as a productivity workhorse or graphical powerhouse compared to say, the iPad or Nexus 10.

Lenovo deserves credit for maximizing build quality and minimizing price. But with better spec’ed alternatives landing under $300 nowadays, the S6000 shapes up as more mid-range fare. It earns a spot as a viable budget option, if not a standout market shaker.
