Samsung Bringing Select Galaxy AI Features to S23, Fold/Flip 5, Tab S9 via One UI 6.1 Before June
Samsung phones and tablets confirmed to receive Galaxy AI features through the One UI 6.1 update:
- Galaxy S23
- Galaxy S23 FE
- Galaxy Z Fold 5
- Galaxy Z Flip 5
- Galaxy Tab S9
- Galaxy Tab S9+
- Galaxy Tab S9 Ultra
Samsung has confirmed that it will bring some of the new Galaxy AI features introduced on the just-launched Galaxy S24 series to older flagship models via a One UI 6.1 update in the first half of 2024.
In a statement to Android Authority, Samsung said the Galaxy S23, S23 FE, Z Fold 5, Z Flip 5, and Tab S9 lineups will receive “many of the Galaxy AI features” before June through the One UI 6.1 upgrade.
The Galaxy S24, S24 Plus, and S24 Ultra come loaded with next-generation AI capabilities enabled by the new Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chip. This includes features like enhanced photo editing, video call live translations, more natural text recommendations, and easier ways to search content on screen.
While Samsung didn't specify exactly which Galaxy AI functionalities will come to older devices, the One UI 6.1 update will likely bring at least some of the new photography, productivity, and accessibility tools. However, processor-intensive features may remain exclusive to the S24 models.
The commitment shows Samsung's goal to expand generative AI across its premium portfolio, rather than limiting it to the latest releases. Bringing Galaxy AI to popular sellers like the S23 and Z Flip 5 should help drive mainstream adoption and familiarity with the technology.
For owners of previous Samsung flagships, gaining any of the handy new AI features will add value and extend the usefulness of their purchase. It may also incentive upgrades to the S24 for those seeking the full suite of next-gen Galaxy AI.
The One UI 6.1 update for older Galaxy devices is expected to begin rolling out before the end of June 2024. Samsung will likely share more details on exactly which AI functionalities are coming to each supported phone and tablet model closer to launch.
For now, users can look forward to potential photography, video, accessibility, productivity, search, and other enhancements powered by Galaxy AI later this year. While the S24 series boasts the most advanced implementation, Samsung is taking steps to distribute key aspects of its AI innovation across its premium device ecosystem.
