Lenovo has released a new 2-in-1 laptop, the Mix 510, that takes direct aim at Microsoft's premium Surface Pro lineup.
Coming in at almost half the price of a comparable Surface Pro 4, the Mix 510 offers a compelling value proposition for shoppers wanting Surface-like versatility without the steep price tag.
Sporting an aluminum body, the Mix 510 feels sturdy and durable with a weight of just 1.94 pounds.
Its watchband kickstand allows for versatile positioning of the 12.2-inch touchscreen, while an optional attachable keyboard provides a comfortable typing experience.
Powering the slim 2-in-1 is an Intel Core i5 processor and 8GB of RAM, providing smooth productivity performance for tasks like web browsing, note taking, and basic content creation.
The sharp 1920×1200 IPS display renders images vividly with wide viewing angles, while the responsive surface recognizes up to 10 touch points.
Downsides of the Mix 510 are mostly ergonomic. The cramped keyboard can trigger incorrect key presses, especially using the Surface-style kickstand on your lap.
Speakers also disappoint with weak, tinny audio compared to leading phones and tablets.
More intensive applications may also push the limits of the fanless Intel integrated graphics, meaning creators and gamers should look at more capable hybrids.
And real-world battery life reliably reaches only 4-5 hours for the Mix 510.
But for mainstream users on a budget wanting a portable daily driver for productivity, web surfing and media enjoyment, the Lenovo Mix 510 presents a compelling option at several hundred dollars less than Microsoft's premium hybrids.
Performance, display quality, and build are highly competitive for the price.
Addressing the speaker and fan noise issues while optimizing battery efficiency would make this already solid Surface clone even more competitive.
But even as-is, the feature-packed Mix 510 gives shoppers wanting premium 2-in-1 functionality a chance to save big over the higher-end Surface Pro.
