The overall rating is based on review by our dedicated team and users.
Acer recently released its Iconia W511, a new Windows 8 tablet priced to compete with Android slates. The W511 offers the full Windows experience in a lightweight yet functional design.
While it lacks premium build quality, the sub $400 price makes it one of the most affordable ways to get Windows 8.
Sporting a 10-inch screen, the all plastic W511 feels solidly put together if not fancy. Its soft rounded corners allow for comfortable handling without digging into your palms.
The 1366×768 resolution display provides decent color reproduction and viewing angles. Images and videos look sharp enough for casual usage.
Under the hood lies an Intel Atom Z2760 processor, 2GB of RAM, and 64GB of storage. Performance proves suitable for web browsing, media playback, and office tasks.
Only demanding games and apps sometimes exhibit slowdowns. But the W511 handles day to day usage admirably well without frustration.
The full Windows 8 Pro OS allows you to leverage legacy desktop software lacking from rival Android and iOS tablets. When paired with the included keyboard dock, the W511 provides a quasi laptop experience for productivity.
The dock also practically doubles battery life to around 18 hours of mixed usage.
While nice for typing, the keyboard dock has its shortcomings. The cramped touchpad loses accuracy and responsiveness after short use. And the dock connection fails to securely grip the tablet.
You may find the tablet slipping out on occasion. This likely rules the W511 out as a laptop replacement solution.
Cameras also fail to impress, with noisyimages lacking in detail. But the 8MP rear and 2MP front shooters should work fine for casual shots. On the plus side, the speakers pump out loud volume with minimal distortion. Just dont block them when holding in landscape orientation.
For those seeking an affordable entry point into Windows 8 tablets, the Iconia W511 warrants consideration. It handles everyday tasks respectably well at a budget price point.
But beware its limitations as a productivity device before purchase. If you can live with the shortcomings, the W511 brings Windows 8 in an accessible package.
