The overall rating is based on review by our dedicated team and users.
Acer expands its Windows tablet lineup with the new Iconia W3, the first 8-inch Windows 8 tablet to hit the market. The diminutive device crams the full desktop version of Windows into a slim, pocket-friendly chassis.
Powering the petite slate is an Intel Atom processor, affording true x86 compatibility to run legacy Windows desktop programs.
This contrasts rival ARM-based Windows RT tablets that only supportapps from the Windows Store. Users also get a generous 2GB RAM helping handle multitasking.
On the storage front, Acer serves up 64GB flash memory for saving apps, media, and personal files. External expansion comes through MicroSD.
Despite the compact footprint, Acer manages to incorporate a surprising number of ports. You'll find Micro HDMI and USB alongside volume controls, headphone jack, and power button, enabling broad peripheral support. There's even a webcam above the 8.1-inch touchscreen.
Users can utilize the Iconia W3 as a standalone tablet for gaming and web browsing. But Acer also offers a Bluetooth keyboard dock transforming it into a mini laptop replacement for productivity.
The full-size keys make typing lengthy documents or emails comfortable during travel.
Software capabilities prove a primary selling point. As a genuine Windows 8 slate, owners gain access to legacy desktop programs including the full Microsoft Office suite. This enables seamless syncing of content from larger Windows machines.
Reviewers praise the Iconia W3's enduring 8+ hours battery life and wallet-friendly $429 starting cost. But while performance suffices for Office apps and light computing, the Atom CPU understandably falls short of flagship tablets and laptops using Intel Core processors.
The most common complaint remains display quality. Critics battered the LCD's graininess and lackluster colors. They argue visuals seem more comparable to tablet's from 5 years ago.
Overall the Iconia W3 will suit mobile professionals needing desktop-class software on a secondary device. But for pure media enjoyment, alternatives like the iPad Mini likely tempt buyers despite higher prices.
