The 990 EVO is an M.2 2280 PCIe 4.0 x4/5 NVMe SSD. It will be offered in 1TB and 2TB capacities using Samsung's V-NAND TLC flash memory.
Performance is strong, with sequential read/write speeds hitting 5,000/4,200 MB/s. Random read/write speeds reach 700k/800k IOPS. The drive has AES 256-bit encryption for security.
A graphene sticker helps dissipate heat. There is no mention of a heatsink version like the 990 PRO.
Pricing is unconfirmed. But Amazon Germany listings show the 1TB model at €114.90 and 2TB at €189.90. That's not much cheaper than the 990 PRO which costs €129.90 (1TB) and €199.90 (2TB) at Samsung Germany.
The 990 EVO slots below the premium 990 PRO in Samsung's NVMe SSD lineup. It provides faster performance than the previous generation 970 EVO Plus.
The 990 EVO boosts sequential read speed 43% over the 970 EVO Plus. It also touts 70% better energy efficiency.
Samsung doesn't share exact availability yet. But the SSD already appearing online points to a launch soon. Look for the 990 EVO to hit store shelves in Europe potentially by the end of January.
The 990 EVO delivers blazing PCIe 4.0 performance at a more affordable price point. It gives Samsung another compelling NVMe option versus rivals like WD, Crucial, and others.
