Galaxy Tab A7 Lite Receives Unexpected Android 14 Upgrade from Samsung
Samsung recently surprised users by releasing the Android 14 and One UI 6 update for the Galaxy Tab A7 Lite.
The budget tablet launched back in 2021 with Android 11. Releasing a major OS update for a 3-year old low-cost tablet is an unexpected move by Samsung.
The update first rolled out in South Korea on January 16. It comes with firmware version T225NKOU6DWL9. The update is over 1.5GB in size.
Samsung will likely expand the rollout to other regions soon. Users in Korea can manually check for the update in their tablet's Settings.
The Android 14 update brings Samsung's One UI 6 software to the Tab A7 Lite. One UI 6 delivers a refreshed UI design and dozens of new features.
It introduces redesigned Quick Settings and notifications panels. The default font and emoji designs are new. Users also get new lock screen clock widgets and camera and weather widgets.
All pre-installed apps have either new capabilities or visual changes. The Gallery app now shows photo editing ideas below each image.
The built-in Photo Editor has more obvious editing buttons. The Video Editor has been renamed to Samsung Studio. The Reminders app gets new categories and interface.
Battery stats now have a dedicated page in Settings. The Samsung Internet and Keyboard apps have new functionality too. Samsung Keyboard lets users clip objects from photos and use them as stickers. Overall, One UI 6 modernizes the user experience on the budget tablet.
The Tab A7 Lite was first released in May 2021. It has a 8.7-inch 800 x 1340 LCD display, MediaTek Helio P22T chipset, 2/3/4GB RAM, 32/64GB storage, 8MP rear and 2MP front cameras, and 5100mAh battery. The tablet launched with Android 11 and One UI 3.1.
With the Android 14 update, the Tab A7 Lite gets its last major OS upgrade. Samsung typically provides 3 years of major software updates to its tablets. Receiving this latest update is a nice surprise for owners, since most competitors forget older budget devices quickly.
Samsung's improving dedication to software support has allowed it to potentially surpass Apple in OS update speed. Apple iPads generally receive 4-5 years of updates. But Samsung is closing the gap by issuing updates more quickly after each Android release.
The Galaxy Tab A7 Lite Android 14 update demonstrates Samsung's commitment to all its products, not just flagships like Galaxy Tab S8 series (which has got Android 14 rolled up). Existing Galaxy tablet owners can expect better long-term software support going forward. Potential customers should feel more confident about buying Samsung tablets, even lower-cost models.
