Chinese manufacturer ZTE has unveiled its latest Windows 8 tablet, the 10-inch ZTE V98. This mid-range device aims to deliver solid performance and features at an affordable price point.
However, early hands-on evaluations indicate it lacks the polish and innovations to stand out in the competitive tablet landscape.
Officially announced at Mobile World Congress 2013 in Barcelona, the V98 runs the full Windows 8 Pro OS on an Intel Atom Z2760 dual-core processor clocked at 1.8GHz.
This provides smooth operation of the Metro UI and desktop environment. The tablet also packs a ample 2GB RAM and 32GB internal storage.
On paper, the hardware specifications seem capable for a mid-tier Windows slate. Unfortunately, real-world usage has left reviewers underwhelmed. While responsive enough for casual use, the V98 fails to deliver truly snappy performance for intensive gaming or multitasking.
Visuals also disappoint with the V98’s 10.1-inch 1366 x 768 resolution TFT screen. While adequate, it simply doesn’t provide the vivid images and wide viewing angles demanded by today’s consumers.
Additionally, the stock Windows 8 user interface scales poorly on this resolution. Icons and text appear undersized and less finger-friendly than expected.
On the plus side, the robust 7000mAh battery should deliver excellent runtimes between charges. The aluminum construction gives the tablet a sturdy yet premium look and feel.
Connectivity options like Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and LTE support ensure versatility for work and play. The 8MP/2MP camera combo produces sharp photos and HD video recording.
Overall though, the V98 feels less like a market leader and more like a “catch-up” product from ZTE. It checks all the right boxes for a 2013 Windows tablet but adds little excitement to attract buyers over offerings from Microsoft, Asus and Lenovo.
Unless pricing is extremely competitive, the ZTE V98 will likely languish as an average, middle-of-the-road option. It earns credit for effort but needs more polish and innovation to thrive.
