Realme Pad 2 Offers Strong Value for Budget Tablet Seekers

Chinese smartphone brand Realme recently launched its second tablet, the aptly named Realme Pad 2. At first glance, the tablet impresses with its premium metallic design, vibrant display, and loud quad speakers. With pricing starting at just $240 for the base 6GB/128GB model, the Realme Pad 2 aims to offer compelling performance and features to budget-conscious buyers.

Design and Display

The Realme Pad 2 boasts a sleek dual-tone metallic shell with polycarbonate elements. Users report the construction feels solidly built, despite the tablet's relatively heavy weight.

Realme has implemented an 11.5-inch IPS LCD display with 1200 x 2000 pixels and buttery smooth 120Hz refresh rate. The screen provides vivid colors, wide viewing angles, and lag-free visuals. A minor drawback is some slight ghosting visible when quickly scrolling text.

Bright Immersive Audio

One highlight of the tablet is its impressive quad speaker audio system with Dolby Atmos support. Audio from videos and games play loudly with enhanced bass for the price class. Music listening quality remains somewhat muddied, though. Users needing expanded sonic capabilities can utilize the tablet's USB-C port.

Unfortunately, Realme opted not to include the traditional 3.5mm headphone jack this round.

Capable Performance, Long Battery Life

Powering the experience is a MediaTek Helio G99 chipset and your choice of 6GB or 8GB of RAM. Early adopters describe the Realme Pad 2 as zippy and responsive for common applications like content creation, web browsing, video conferencing, and light gaming. For demanding users, storage can be upgraded to 256GB as desired.

Battery capacity measures an enormous 8,360 mAh—enough for over 8 hours screen time for some. Fast charging replenishes half the juice in around 50 minutes.

Decent Cameras, LTE Connectivity

While image quality from the Pad 2's 8MP main and 5MP selfie shooters proves only moderate, camera functionality has improved over the 1st gen Pad. Owners happily utilize the cameras for basic shots, document scanning, and video calls.

As a bonus, an integrated SIM card slot equips the tablet with mobile data capabilities and phone functionality. This makes the Realme Pad 2 handy for staying online anywhere without relying on WiFi networks for a connection.

Unfortunately 5G network speeds remain unsupported.

Strong Overall Value with Some Shortcomings

Starting under $240, the Realme Pad 2 brings nice refinements over the previous model at a highly affordable cost. Interested tablet shoppers would be wise to consider the Realme Pad 2 versus devices from Lenovo, Nokia, and Samsung in the same price segment.

Software support could extend longer than the standard 2 years of updates, however. And build quality control issues occasionally crop up with budget Chinese devices down the road.

Still, initial reviews indicate the Realme Pad 2 punches above its class while delivering a polished entertainment and productivity slate for consumers.
