Purism, maker of Linux-based laptops and smartphones, has announced its first tablet this week.

The Librem 11 packs decent specs like a quad-core Intel processor and high-resolution screen into a $999 price point. This slate stands out by running Purism’s own privacy-focused Linux distro PureOS out of the box.

It also ships with a bundle of accessories like a keyboard and stylus.

Intriguing Specs with Some Caveats

On paper, the Librem 11 looks competitive to premium tablets from Apple and Microsoft. It sports an 11.5-inch OLED screen with a sharp 2560×1600 resolution. Powering the device is a capable Intel N5100 quad-core chip up to 2.8GHz, plus a healthy 8GB of RAM and 1TB solid-state drive. This hardware enables solid performance for everyday tasks.

The tablet also packs nice extras many competitors lack, like multiple USB-C ports, a microSD card reader, fingerprint login, WiFi 6, and Bluetooth 5.0.However, hands-on testing will show if the Librem 11’s specs translate into smooth real-world speed. Past Purism laptops have suffered slowdowns.

Upgradability is also limited since the RAM cannot be expanded. And app selection lags behind platforms like iPadOS, an ongoing issue facing Linux-based mobile devices.

Focus on Security and Privacy

PureOS, Purism’s Debian-based Linux distribution, powers the tablet out of the box focused on privacy and security. The OS runs free, open source software with frequent updates.

PureOS also enables full user control over data and hardware access permissions preferred by privacy-minded consumers.

On the hardware side, Purism says the Librem 11 utilizes their secure PureBoot system. This neutralizes components like Intel’s Management Engine that could expose backdoors. Extra protection comes from the included Librem Key and tamper-evident boot software.

Bundled Keyboard, Stylus and Software

Setting the Librem 11 apart from other premium tablets is its bundled accessories. It ships standard with a keyboard case allowing laptop-style functionality. An active stylus pen capable of tilting and 4,096 pressure levels also comes included.

For software, customers gain access to Purism’s encrypted chat app PureChat and other secure communication tools.

Shipping and Past Execution Issues

Purism’s Librem 11 marks an encouraging foray into Linux-based tablets. If the company delivers on performance and ships units punctually, it will validate Purism's vision advancing privacy-focused mobile devices.

However, Purism does carry reputational damage from the botched Librem 5 smartphone launch plagued by lengthy delays. This tablet’s $999 cost also looks steep compared to Windows alternatives when factoring bundled keyboards.

Still, the Librem 11’s standout privacy pitch could drive demand if the product lives up to its potential. We will keep an eye on early reviews and user reports as Purism’s newest device reaches customers’ hands.
