Pros: - Large 7-inch display - microSD card slot - FM radio Cons: - Low 600x1024 resolution display - Older single core 1GHz processor - Only Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich OS |
The overall rating is based on review by our dedicated team and users.
Icemobile has released its latest device, the G5. This new product tries to bridge the gap between smartphones and tablets by packing a 7-inch display into a phone form factor.
Launched in January 2013, the G5 sports a low 600×1024 pixel resolution TFT screen.
Running Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, it is powered by a 1GHz single core processor along with a PowerVR SGX531 GPU. There is also a 3000mAh non-removable battery.
In terms of memory, the G5 comes with a microSD card slot able to support cards up to 32GB. For photography, a basic 2MP rear camera allows you to shoot photos and videos. There is also a lower resolution VGA front-facing camera for video calls and selfies.
Connectivity options in the G5 include Wi-Fi b/g/n, Bluetooth, GPS, FM radio, and a micro USB 2.0 port. Sensors onboard include an accelerometer. Unique features highlighted include an analog TV tuner.
This device brings a tablet-sized screen to consumers on a budget. The large 7-inch display allows you to view more content compared to standard 5-inch phones.
It should excel at media consumption. The microSD support also lets you store lots of music and videos.
However, the low resolution screen and older single core processor shows where Icemobile had to cut costs. Performance and visuals will not match more expensive phones.
The dated Android 4.0 OS is also a letdown. Still, for the price this huge screen phone could find an audience.
In the end, while the G5 will not compete spec-wise with top-tier devices, its ultra-large display at a wallet-friendly price gives it a specific appeal.
If you want as big a screen as possible for watching videos, browsing the web, and viewing photos on a tight budget, the Icemobile G5 warrants a look.
