Japan Display (JDI) To Produce Larger OLED Displays For Tablets By 2025
The roadmap for Japan Display (JDI) shows that the Japanese screen manufacturer will enter the tablet market with OLED displays by 2025, according to Nikkei.
JDI has produced small OLED panels for smartwatches for years, but not any larger displays. Not even for the latest OLED smartphones, despite being among a dozen of the largest panel manufactures in the world.
The company has previously lacked the technology to produce stable enough large OLED panels, but JDI is now believed to have overcome these obstacles and are looking to produce 10-inch to 14-inch OLED displays for tablets and notebooks by 2025.
These will be the latest eLEAP panels which is JDI's acronym for long-lasting, high brightness OLED panels, that theoretically does not wear out or deteriorate much through many years of use.
JDI acquired the Japanese OLED specialist company JOLED in July, which was what it needed in order to refine and develop its screen technologies, so that it could break into the market for larger OLED screens.
OLED displays are estimated to get an increasingly larger share of the tablet display market in the years to come, especially after Apple finally introduces OLED iPads in 2024.
Samsung and Lenovo have been using OLED displays on their flagship tablets for years, while HP has just joined them, and Samsung's class leading new AMOLED display in the Galaxy Tab S9 line is so good that you have to pinch your arm when you see it.
Main benefits of OLED displays in general includes deeper black, a more fluid visual experience, more natural yet very vivid colors, and improved battery life due to lower energy consumption compared to LCD displays.
The main drawback has been the higher cost for the panel, but the price gap between LCD and OLED displays has become narrower over the years.
