How to Stream Netflix, Prime Video, Disney Plus, and Others on Discord
Discord is a fantastic platform for hanging out with friends and sharing experiences. One of its cool features is the ability to screen share in voice channels, allowing you to stream content from your screen. However, when it comes to streaming services like Netflix, Prime Video, and Disney Plus, there is a DRM protection that prevents your friends from seeing the content. But fear not! There are a few settings you can tweak on your browser and the Discord app to bypass this protection and enjoy streaming with your friends.
Before Streaming Netflix, Prime Video or Disney on Discord
First things first, streaming apps from services like Netflix and Prime Video won't work on Discord. Instead, you'll need to use the browser version of these services. However, there are two problems you need to address: audio and video.
Fix Audio While Streaming on Discord
If you're using Discord and Netflix on the same browser, audio won't be an issue. Your friends will be able to hear the audio from the Netflix app without any additional steps. However, if you prefer using the Discord app, there's a small setting you need to change.
- Open Discord settings by clicking on the cog icon at the bottom left corner.
- In Settings, scroll down and select the “Activity Status” menu in the sidebar. Click on “Add it!” next to “Not seeing your game?”
- From the drop-down menu, select the browser you use for streaming and click on “Add Game.”
By adding the browser as a game, you'll be able to stream audio even when using the Discord app.
Fix Video While Streaming on Discord
When you share your screen on Discord while using streaming services like Netflix, Prime Video, or Disney Plus, your friends will only see a black screen. This issue exists whether you're using the Discord desktop or web app. To bypass this problem, you need to disable hardware acceleration on your browser.
To disable hardware acceleration on Google Chrome and other Chromium-based browsers, follow these steps:
- Open the three-dot menu, go to Settings, then Advanced, and finally System. Disable the toggle next to “Use hardware acceleration when available.”
For Firefox, do the following:
- Open the three-dot menu, go to Settings, then General. Scroll down to the Performance section and uncheck the checkbox next to “Use recommended performance settings.” This will enable manual configuration options. Uncheck the checkbox next to “Use hardware acceleration when available.”
If you're using the Discord app, you'll also need to disable hardware acceleration within the app:
- Open the Discord app and click on the cog icon to access Discord Settings.
- Go to the Advanced tab and turn off the toggle next to “Hardware acceleration.” Click “Okay” to confirm.
How to Stream Netflix, Disney Plus, and Prime Video on Discord
Now that you've disabled hardware acceleration, you can start streaming on Discord.
Using Discord on the Browser
- Open Discord and select the server and voice channel where you want to stream content with your friends.
- Click once to enter the voice channel and click again to open it. You'll see the option to stream.
- In the voice channel, click on the “Share your Screen” icon at the bottom.
- Select the browser tab and then the tab where you're streaming the movie (e.g., Netflix or Prime Video).
- That's it! You can now begin streaming, and everyone in the voice channel will be able to view your stream.
Using the Discord App
- Open the Discord app and select the server you want to stream.
- Click on the “Stream” icon at the bottom left, above the username bar. This option will appear when you've added the browser as a game and when the browser is running in the background. If you don't see this option, simply open the browser and check again.
- A pop-up window will appear, allowing you to set the voice channel, resolution, and frame rate.
- Once you've configured the settings, click on the “Go Live” button. This will open the voice channel and display the stream to your friends.
Discord Night Outs
By using the built-in tools of Discord and your browser, you can easily bypass DRM protection without relying on third-party apps or Discord bots. Although streaming directly from the Netflix or Prime Video app won't work, you can achieve the same result by playing the content in your browser. Just remember to disable hardware acceleration in the browser. If you prefer using the Discord app, turn off hardware acceleration within the app as well. Now you can share your streaming screen and enjoy fun-filled Discord night outs with your friends. And when it comes to YouTube, you even get better integration with Discord, allowing you to control everything directly from within Discord.
