11 Tips to Improve Your Handwriting to Text Experience on iPad
If you're an iPad user, you probably already know that it allows you to take handwritten notes and even convert them into typed text. But did you know that there are several tips and tricks that can enhance your handwriting to text experience on the iPad? Whether you're a student, professional, or someone who simply enjoys using their iPad for note-taking, these tips will help you make the most out of this feature. So, let's dive in!
1. Enable or Disable Scribble
To convert your handwriting to text in real-time on the iPad, you need to enable the Scribble feature. Simply go to Settings on your iPad, then navigate to Apple Pencil and enable the toggle next to Scribble. And if you ever decide you don't want to use this feature, you can easily turn it off.
2. Write in Any Text Field
Contrary to popular belief, the handwriting to text feature is not limited to the Apple Notes app. You can write in any text field in supported Apple apps such as Reminders, Email, Pages, Safari, and more. Just start writing in the text field using your Apple Pencil, and you can even write beyond the edges of the text box.
3. Use Action Toolbar
When you're writing with your Apple Pencil, you'll notice an action toolbar at the bottom of the screen. The tools in this toolbar may vary depending on the app you're using. For example, in Safari, you'll see a big Search button, while in the Pages app, you'll find formatting icons. Some tools, such as Undo, Show Keyboard, and Apple Pencil settings, remain constant.
4. Auto Minimize Toolbar
While the action toolbar is useful, it can sometimes be distracting if it stays on the screen when you don't need it. To minimize the toolbar automatically, tap on the three-dot icon in the toolbar and enable the toggle next to Auto-minimize. And when you need to access the full version of the toolbar, simply tap on the minimized version.
5. Write Handwritten Notes in Apple Notes App
The Apple Notes app is widely used for writing handwritten notes. To take handwritten notes in this app, follow these steps:
- Open a new or existing note in the Apple Notes app.
- Tap on the Markup toolbar icon at the top.
- Tap on the floating Pen button at the bottom to expand it.
- Tap on the Handwriting pen that says A to activate the Scribble mode.
Now you can start writing anywhere on the screen, and the iPad will automatically convert your handwriting to typed text.
6. Edit Handwritten Text
Once your handwritten text is converted to typed text, you can easily edit it using the following techniques:
- To delete a typed word, scratch it out using the Apple Pencil.
- Draw a vertical line between characters to join or separate words or characters.
- Touch and hold the text area where you want to insert more text, and write in the space that appears.
7. Select Text
There are multiple ways to select the typed text after it has been converted from handwriting:
- Double-tap a word to select it.
- Draw a circle around the text using the Apple Pencil to select it.
- Underline the text with the Apple Pencil.
- Triple-tap a word or at the start of a line/paragraph to select it.
- Drag the Apple Pencil over the paragraph to select it.
8. Convert Normal Handwriting to Text
If you have an existing handwritten note that you want to convert into typed text, you can do so easily. Simply double-tap on the handwritten text to select it, and then choose the “Copy to text” option from the menu. You can then paste the copied text into the same note or a different app, where it will be converted into regular or transcribed text.
9. Translate Text
If you need to translate handwritten text into another language, it's a breeze on the iPad. Just select the desired text and tap on the “Translate” option in the pop-up menu. A Translate window will open, allowing you to select the new language, copy the translation, or add it to your favorites.
10. Move Handwritten Text
To move your handwritten text, you need to select it first. You can do this by double-tapping the text or by using the Lasso tool. Activate the Lasso tool by opening the Markup toolbar in the Notes app and tapping on the Lasso tool (located between the eraser and ruler). With the Lasso tool active, draw a circle around the desired text and drag it to the new position.
11. Take Action on Important Data
When you write informational data such as phone numbers, dates, addresses, emails, etc., your iPad will automatically detect it and show a yellow underline below the handwritten text. Tap on the text to open the associated app or to show relevant options.
Bonus Tip: Draw Perfect Shapes
While taking handwritten notes, you can draw perfect shapes using your Apple Pencil. Simply draw a shape, and when you're about to finish, stop and hold the Apple Pencil at the finishing point for a few seconds. The irregular shape will automatically be converted into a perfect shape. This trick works for straight lines, squares, circles, rectangles, arrows, stars, and more.
