What the Colors on Your PS5 Controller Mean
Now that you own a PS5, you've noticed that the DualSense controller has a light bar that comes in a variety of colors.
These lights serve a purpose beyond aesthetics as they convey important information about the status and function of the controller. In this article, we will explain the meaning behind the different light colors on the PS5 controller.
Different Light Colors on a PS5 Controller
Here's what you need to know about the various light colors on your PS5 controller and what they indicate.
Blue, Red, Green, and Purple Light Colors

A solid blue light indicates that your PS5 controller is fully charged and connected to the console. If the blue light starts blinking, it means there are connection issues with the controller.
When you connect additional controllers, the light bar on each controller changes color. The second controller's light bar turns red, the third controller's light bar becomes green, and the fourth controller's light bar turns purple.
This feature is especially useful when playing multiplayer games with multiple controllers.
Orange Light Colors
The orange light on your PS5 controller indicates its charging and battery status. If you see an orange light while the controller is not charging, it means the battery is low.
When you start charging the controller, the orange light will pulse. Once it is fully charged, the orange light will stop flashing.
Note that a flashing orange light can also indicate that your console is entering Rest Mode. However, if you see an orange or yellow light blink thrice when you turn on your PS5 controller, it indicates a problem with the controller, such as issues with the battery, charging port, or cable.
White Light Colors
A solid white light on your PS5 controller means it is working correctly or in standby mode. However, if you see a flashing white light, it indicates that your PS5 console is in an error state, likely frozen.
Additionally, if you have connected your controller to an Android, iPhone, Windows, or Mac device, you might see a combination of orange and white lights.
Mic Light Colors
The LED bar below the PS button on your controller indicates the status of the microphone. An orange light means the microphone is muted, while an off orange light means the microphone is active.
How to Adjust the Brightness of Your PS5 Controller Light

By default, the brightness of the light bar on your PS5 controller is set to the highest level, which can be overwhelming in a dark setting. Luckily, you can easily adjust the brightness.
- Go to your home screen and select the Settings icon in the top right corner.
- Choose Accessories from the list.
- Select Controller from the left pane and then select the Brightness of Controller Indicators option.
- Choose your preferred brightness level from the resulting menu: Bright (Standard), Medium, or Dim.
The change in brightness will be reflected immediately on your controller's light bar.
