Pros: - Thin and lightweight design makes it very portable - Feels great to hold in one hand - Sharp, high-density display Cons: - Build quality feels creaky and fragile - Display resolution lower than competitor tablets - Struggles with demanding graphics programs |
The overall rating is based on review by our dedicated team and users.
Samsung's latest foray into Windows tablets impresses at first glance with an incredibly thin and lightweight design. Clocking in at just 0.32 inches thick and 1.2 pounds, the ATIV Tab 3 feels great for on-the-go use.
Its 10.1-inch size hits a sweet spot between portability and screen real estate. Samsung packs admirable components into the svelte frame, including an Intel Atom processor, 2GB RAM, and 64GB storage.
In testing however, this slate's budget build becomes apparent. The all-plastic construction elicits creaks and flexes when handled. Samsung still has work to do refining its budget tablet aesthetics.
Additionally, the ATIV Tab 3's 1366×768 resolution display underwhelms. Icons and text lack sharpness compared to rival tablets. For a device centered around the visual Windows 8 interface, the low-grade panel disappoints.
The Intel Atom CPU breezes through basic navigation plus Office apps, but predictably bogs down running intensive programs. With middling graphics performance, don't expect buttery gameplay or lightning photo editing. Battery life also rates as just average, with real-world use lasting 5-7 hours on a charge.
On the plus side, Samsung's custom apps provide added functionality for notes, media, and cloud syncing. And the ATIV Tab 3 works with a keyboard dock for laptop-like productivity. Its digitizer pen allows pressure-sensitive ink input as well, handy for artists and note-takers.
The ATIV Tab 3 brings portable and usable Windows 8 capabilities. But with its uninspired design and dim display, Samsung's middle-child Windows tablet fails to stand out among a crowded field of convertible and detachable 2-in-1s.
The choice comes down to priorities: portability versus power. For an ultra-light Windows tab, the ATIV Tab 3 transports easily. Just don't expect a spectacular visual or computing experience.
