How to Upload Different Types of Content on DeviantArt
Deviations may be the most popular type of content on DeviantArt, but the platform allows users to upload various other content types, including status updates, journals, polls, prints, literature, and more. In this article, we will guide you on how to upload each supported content type on DeviantArt and provide you with essential information about each one.
How to Upload Deviations on DeviantArt
Deviation refers to any form of art, such as a photo, video, GIF, PDF, vector art SWF files, ZIP file, and more. The file size should not exceed 200 MB, and if it's a video, the maximum length supported by DeviantArt is 20 minutes with a resolution of 1920×1080.
To upload any type of content on DeviantArt, follow these steps:
- Click on the “Submit” option at the top right corner of almost any page on DeviantArt and select “Deviation.”
- On the submit page, either drag and drop the file or click on “Choose a file to upload” to select the file as a Deviation. You can also choose a file from sta.sh storage, which DeviantArt supports.
- Once the file is selected, give your Deviation a name, description, and up to 30 tags to increase its visibility.
- Click on “Show Advanced Options” to add a location tag, configure comment and sharing settings, add it to a gallery, and more.
- If you are a DeviantArt Core member, you can choose to make your content visible only to your subscribers. As a Core member, you also have the option for “Premium downloads,” where members need to pay to download your artwork.
- Finally, click on “Submit Now” to publish your art.
Your Deviations can be viewed on the homepage or your profile page, and you can edit or delete them at any time.
How to Post Status Updates on DeviantArt
Status updates are quick updates where you can share your thoughts on DeviantArt. There is no character limit, and you can also add pictures, galleries, videos, and gifs to your status. There are multiple ways to update your status on DeviantArt.
Here's how you can upload a status update:
- Click on the “Submit” option at the top right corner and select “Status Update.” This will open a pop-up window where you can update your status. Once you're satisfied, click on “Submit.”
- Alternatively, you can open the “Posts” tab on the homepage and update your status from there.
- You can also open your profile page, select “Posts,” and update your status.
Once published, you can edit, delete, pin, mark as a favorite, and more with your status. People can find your status on the posts section of the homepage and your profile page.
How to Post Journals on DeviantArt
Journals are an extended version of status updates and offer additional features. You can give a title to your journal, add a cover photo, and include headings within the post. Journals have more text formatting options, such as quotes and underlined text.
To create a journal, you can:
- Click on the “Submit” option at the top right corner and choose “Journal.” In the pop-up that appears, add details like the title and cover photo. You can either submit the journal or save it as a draft to finish later.
- Access the journal creation option from the “Post” section on the homepage or your profile page.
Once published, people can access your journals from the posts tab on your homepage and your profile page. You can edit, delete, pin, mark as a favorite, and more with your journals. Additionally, people can check the estimated reading time for journals, which is not available for status updates.
How to Post Literature on DeviantArt
Literature refers to journals that are posted as deviations instead of regular posts, making them more valuable. Members often use literature to share song lyrics, quotes, research articles, poetry, and more. Unlike journals, you cannot add a cover photo or headings within the post.
To post literature on DeviantArt:
- Click on the “Submit” button at the top right corner and select “Literature.” This will open a pop-up similar to the journal creation window.
- Add a title and your literature to the pop-up and click on “Submit.”
- You will be redirected to the Deviation submission page, where you can add a title, description, and other details similar to deviations. Click on “Submit Now” to submit your literature.
Other members can access your literature in the Deviation section since it is posted as a deviation rather than a regular post.
How to Post Commissions on DeviantArt
DeviantArt allows members to sell their art through commissions. However, you cannot sell your deviations unless you are a DeviantArt Core member. If you are not, there is an alternative way to sell your art without upgrading to Core membership: commissions.
To post a commission on DeviantArt:
- Open your profile page by clicking on the profile icon at the top right corner and selecting your DeviantArt username.
- On your profile page, open the “Shop” tab.
- Scroll down and click on the “+Add new” option next to Commissions.
- In the pop-up window, upload the art you want to sell. Note that you can only sell art in image format, not videos, PDFs, or ZIP files.
- Enter the price you want to sell the image for. DeviantArt takes a 20% commission from your selling price, so price it accordingly. Core members do not pay this commission.
- Click on “Create” to finalize the commission. Your image will now be listed for sale at the specified price.
Please note that people can only view your commissions on your profile page in the Shop tab. You can promote your commissions in your own way to reach a wider audience.
How to Post Prints on DeviantArt
Prints on DeviantArt refer to physical products such as mugs, greeting cards, postcards, mousepads, and more. DeviantArt produces and sells these products with the artwork you submit. Unlike commissions, you cannot configure the price for prints. DeviantArt sets the price based on the product type and category, and you receive a cut, which may vary depending on the product.
To post prints on DeviantArt:
- Open your profile page by clicking on the profile icon at the top right corner and selecting your DeviantArt username.
- On your profile page, open the “Home” tab and choose a deviation with a photo.
- Click on the pencil icon to edit the deviation.
- Enable the checkmark next to “Sell Prints.”
- To configure the product, disable the checkmark next to “Use recommended defaults” and click on “Continue.” On the next page, select the products and sizes you want to sell with your art printed on them.
- Add a product description and click on “Update.”
Your prints can be accessed by opening your profile page, going to the “Shop” section, and selecting “Prints.” Other members can find products with your printed art in the “Prints shop,” which can be accessed by clicking the three-dot menu at the top right corner on the homepage and selecting the “Prints shop” option.
How to Post Polls on DeviantArt
Polls on DeviantArt are similar to status updates but with added poll functionality. The main difference is that you cannot edit a poll once someone has voted on it. Results are visible immediately, and people can view the results after voting.
To post a poll on DeviantArt:
- Click on the “Submit” button at the top right corner and choose the “Poll” option.
- Add a question and options to the poll. You can also include images, emojis, and emoticons if desired.
- Click on “Submit.” Others can find your poll on the posts tab.
How to Use Da Muro on DeviantArt
Da Muro is DeviantArt's built-in drawing tool that allows users to create drawings and illustrations. It offers more than 25 brushes, various tools, color adjustment options, and presets.
To use Da Muro:
- Click on the “Submit” button and select the “Da Muro” option.
- This will open the Da Muro tool, where you can utilize the brushes and tools to create your artwork.

Remember that each content type has its own set of rules and will reach the audience differently. Deviations are the most important type of content on DeviantArt, so choose a good username from the start as changing your username on DeviantArt is a paid process.
