How to Enhance Parental Controls on Netflix
During the pandemic, as more families are staying at home, Netflix has introduced new features to its parental control settings. Now, parents can lock profiles with a PIN and filter out titles based on ratings or block individual titles. Here's how you can set up enhanced parental controls on Netflix.
PIN Lock on Profiles
Previously, kids could easily switch to any profile they wanted. Now, you can password protect your profile to keep them out. Here's how to set it up:
-
Go to the Netflix website and click on the profile icon at the top-right corner. From the drop-down menu, select “Account.”
-
On the Account page, scroll down to the “Profile & Parental Controls” section. Click on the arrow next to the profile you want to lock, such as your own or any adult profile.
-
In the extended menu, click on the “Change” button next to Profile Lock.
-
Enter your account password for verification.
-
Check the box next to “Require a PIN to access profile.” Set up a 4-digit PIN for the profile and click on the Save button.
Once you've set up a PIN for the profiles, you'll see a lock icon next to the profile in the Account settings. You'll also receive an email from Netflix with the PIN lock details.
Viewing Restrictions
To ensure that your child doesn't see any inappropriate content, you can set up restrictions on their profile. Here's how:
-
Under the Account settings, click on the arrow next to your child's profile. From the extended menu, click on the “Change” button next to “Viewing Restrictions.”
-
Enter your account password for verification.
-
On the Viewing Restrictions page, you can age-restrict the account. For example, if your child is 9 years old, you can set the account restriction to 7+.
-
Netflix will now only show titles that are rated 7+ and below on that account. Additionally, you can filter out specific titles based on their names. Simply type the title you want to block, select it from the prompt, and click on the Save button.
The recent update allows you to filter out specific titles for your child's profile.
By following these steps, you can enhance parental controls on Netflix and ensure a safer viewing experience for your child. Remember not to share your account password or enable your profile on common room devices.
