3 Easy Ways to Find Your Chromebook Model
Not all Chromebooks are created equal. Each model has its own unique features, specifications, and support options. Whether you want to check the expiration date of your Chrome OS, determine Linux compatibility, or sell your device, knowing the model number is crucial. In this article, we will explore three simple methods to find out what Chromebook model you have.
Before Getting Started
Before diving into the technical details, here are a few quick ways to find your Chromebook model number:
- Check the packaging or box your Chromebook came in. The model number is often printed on the package.
- Look on the bottom of your Chromebook. Many devices have the model number printed on the back or on a sticker.
- Check your shopping history on the platform where you purchased your Chromebook. The model number is usually listed in the product description.
If these methods don't work for you, don't worry. There are additional ways to find your Chromebook's model number and specifications.
Method 1: Using the Chromebook Recovery Utility
The Chromebook Recovery Utility is a handy Chrome extension that allows you to create recovery media for your device. However, it also offers an easy way to find your model number.
- Install the Chromebook Recovery Utility Chrome extension on your Chromebook.
- Click on the Extensions icon at the top right corner of the Chrome browser and select the Chromebook Recovery Utility option.
- This will open the utility in a new window. Click on the Get Started button at the bottom right corner.
- On the next page, you will be prompted to enter the model number. However, you can simply click on the codename next to “For this Chromebook, enter.”
- The model number of your Chromebook will be displayed under the Chromebook picture on the right side of the window.
Method 2: Find on the About Page
You can also find your Chromebook model number by accessing the About page of your device.
- Open your Chrome browser and enter chrome://system in the address bar, then press Enter.
- On the About Chrome page, press Ctrl+F and search for model_name (with an underscore in between).
- Scroll down, and you will find the model number of your Chromebook listed.
Method 3: Using the Cog Chrome Extension
If the previous methods did not work, you can try using the Cog Chrome extension.
- Install the Cog Chrome Extension from the Chrome Web Store.
- Open the Cog app from your app drawer.
- In the app, you will find the hardware details of your device displayed in a clean user interface. Take note of the processor name (CPU) and the amount of RAM.
- Perform a quick Google search using your device manufacturer's name + “Chromebook” + the processor name. For example, you can search for “HP Chromebook Intel Celeron N4020 CPU.”
- This search should bring up product results from e-commerce sites and the manufacturer's website, which will help you find the model number. If needed, you can add additional details such as screen size and RAM to narrow down your search.
Finding Your Chromebook Model Name
Once you have discovered the model of your Chromebook, you can check if it supports Linux, Android apps, and the expiration date for updates. Google maintains a list of all Chromebooks and their expiration dates for your reference. Alternatively, you can navigate to Settings > About Chrome OS > Additional Details on your Chromebook to find the update schedule, including the expiration date.
