How to Take Control of Your Google Activity

Google knows more about you than you might think. From your movie preferences to the places you’ve visited, Google keeps track of it all. But don’t worry, you can regain control of your data. In this article, we’ll show you how to access and delete all your Google activities.

Accessing Your Google Activity History

To access your Google activity history, follow these steps:

  1. Open any Google app, website, or service on your device and tap on your profile picture in the top right corner.
  2. Tap the “Manage your Google Account” button.
  3. Go to the “Data & Privacy” tab and tap on the “My Activity” button. Here, you can view all your activities stored in Google.
  4. To filter your activity by date or product, tap on the “Filter by date & product” button. You can select a custom date range and product to view your Google activity for.

Backing Up and Downloading Your Google Activity

Before deleting your Google activity, it’s a good idea to back up your data. Here’s how you can do it:

  1. Open the Google app or website on your device.
  2. Tap on your profile picture and select the “Manage your Google Account” option.
  3. Go to the “Data & privacy” section and select the “Content saved from Google services” option under Apps and services.
  4. Tap on the “Download your data” option, select the list of products you want to back up, and tap “Next step.”
  5. Choose the file destination, frequency, file format, and file size. Once done, tap the “Create export” button.

To download your backup file, follow these instructions:

  1. Once the backup is completed, you’ll receive an email from Google with the download link.
  2. Tap the “Download your files” button, enter your Gmail password, and tap “Next.”
  3. Select your backup file and hit the “Download” button.

Deleting Your Google Activity

Now that you’ve backed up your Google activity, it’s time to delete it. There are different ways to delete your Google activity:

1. Individually

One easy way to delete your Google activity is by removing items individually. Here’s how:

  1. Navigate to “Google > Profile Picture > Manage your Google Account > Data & Privacy > My Activity.”
  2. Tap on the “Cross (X)” icon next to the activity you want to delete.
  3. To delete activities from a specific Google product or service, use the “Filter” option.

2. All Your Google Activity

If you want to delete all your Google history at once, follow these steps:

  1. In your “My Activity” page, tap on the “Delete” button and select the “All time” option.
  2. Choose whether you want to delete activities for all Google products or specific ones. Then, hit “Next.”
  3. Finally, tap on the “Delete” button, and all your activities will be deleted from your Google account.

3. Time Range

To delete all your Google activity from a specific time frame, follow these steps:

  1. Tap on the “Delete” button and select the “Custom Range” option.
  2. Choose a date range and hit “Next.”
  3. Decide whether to delete your activity across all Google products or only from specific ones. Then, select “Next.”
  4. Finally, hit the “Delete” button, and your Google activity will be permanently deleted.

4. Auto-Delete

To avoid the hassle of manual deletion, you can enable the auto-delete feature. Here’s how:

  1. Go to the “My Activity” page, select the “Web & App Activity” option, and choose the auto-delete option.
  2. Select the “Auto-delete activity older than” option and choose the duration. Then, tap “Next.”
  3. Confirm your decision by tapping the “Confirm” button.

If you want to set auto-deletion for a specific product, follow these steps:

  1. Go to the “Web & App Activity” page and select the product you want to enable the auto-delete activity option on.
  2. Select the “Auto-delete” option and choose the “Auto-delete activity older than” option along with the duration. Then, hit “Next.”
  3. Confirm your decision by tapping the “Confirm” button.

Disabling Google Activity Tracking

If you want to prevent Google from tracking your activities altogether, follow these steps:

  1. Navigate to “Google > Profile Picture > Manage your Google Account > Data & Privacy > My Activity.”
  2. Select the “Web & App Activity” option and tap on the “Turn Off” button.

You can choose between “Turn off” or “Turn off and delete activity.” We recommend selecting the “Turn off and delete activity” option to ensure your old data is not used for personalized content or recommendations.

  1. On the following screen, tap “Next” and choose the product you want to disable Google Activity for.
  2. Finally, hit the “Delete” button, and your Google Activity will be turned off.

Note: If your YouTube or Google Maps activity is not getting deleted or disabled, you can go to the Location History and YouTube History pages and repeat the same steps mentioned above.

Erasing Your Digital Footprints
