Are you one of those people who try to get the best of both worlds, with both a small tablet and a large smartphone tucked into one device, and then end up buying a 6-inch phablet or 7-inch tablet phone and thus become an easy target for ridicule and primitive jokes?
Well thanks to Samsung, starting next year, the jokes may no longer be on you and you may even be herald as a innovative daredevil when Samsung may start to produce 8/9-inch tablets that can be folded two times into a 4/5-inch smartphone, having seen the potential in combining the best of both worlds.
Samsung have reportedly already built prototypes of such a combined “foldlet or tabfold” smartphone and tablet device, which was supposedly shown to VIP’s at CES in Las Vegas in January this year.
The display Samsung is working with is reportedly a OLED display, although this should not be the essential bit. The main challenges lies with the hinge construction, the combined thickness when folded, the durability of the frames, and the gap between each display.
Is there a market for it? I don’t see why there isn’t.
Can Samsung pull it off successfully? Well, they do have some really capable engineers as well as designers, and Samsung is also very eager to lead the mobile sector, so I personally think they will be able to pull it off.
We will see in 2015, and it gives us something really fresh to look forward to in the world of tablets and smartphones in the meantime.
Samsung is not the first tablet brand to experiment with foldable tablets though, as Acer had a large 14-inch Windows 7 foldable dual screen notebook 4 years ago with the Acer Iconia 6120, while Sony had the smaller foldable tablet Sony Tablet P with Android, neither of which became much successes. But both consumers and technology have advanced since then, so by 2015 things may be very different.
